November 4, 2008 Election Results
At least 91 women will serve in the 111th United States Congress. More than have ever served before.
US Senate
17 women (13D, 4R) will serve in the US Senate – besting the previous record of 16 set in the 110th Congress. 4 of the women (3D, 1R) won their elections on November 4th, 2008 including 2 incumbents; Susan Collins R-ME and Mary Landrieu D-LA and 2 newcomers; Kay Hagan D-NC and Jeanne Shaheen D-NH.
US House of Representatives
At least 74 women (57D, 17R) will serve in the US House of Represenatives– setting an all-time high. Among the Congresswomen will be 12 (D) African-Americans; 7 (6D, 1R) Latinas; and 2 (D) Asian-Americans.
Governors
The total number of female governors will remain at 8 with 5D and 3R. Bev Purdue of North Carolina is the only newly elected woman governor and joins incumbent Christine GRegoire (D-WA) who was re-elected.
